China figures need a currency and a period check

The figure or the record

Kuaishou's fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 results release, published 25 March 2025, states total revenue of RMB126.9 billion for the year ended 31 December 2024, up 11.8% from RMB113.5 billion in 2023, with figures given throughout in RMB rather than US dollars. CNNIC's 55th statistical report, published 17 January 2025, states that micro-drama users reached 662 million as of December 2024, a 59.7% usage rate among Chinese internet users. CNNIC's 56th report, published 21 July 2025, gives internet user figures as of June 2025 but does not repeat the micro-drama figure.

What the documents establish

The Kuaishou release establishes a calendar-year fiscal period, RMB as the reporting currency, and a figure that is a company's own filed total rather than a modelled estimate. The two CNNIC reports establish a semi-annual cadence with a reference date that lags the publication date by roughly six weeks, and they establish that not every metric recurs in every edition, the micro-drama figure appears in the January 2025 report and is absent from the July 2025 one read here.

Scope and caveats

Each of these documents is dated and stated in its own currency and period; none converts to US dollars or to a common calendar quarter, and this description does not perform that conversion either. A reader who compares a CNNIC figure dated December 2024 with a Kuaishou figure for full-year 2024, or with a dollar-denominated analyst estimate for a different period, is comparing three different reference dates unless each is checked and restated.

What to watch

An editorial checklist for any China-linked figure in this ledger: name the currency, name the reporting or reference period, and check whether the same metric recurs in the next edition of the same series before treating its absence as a change in the underlying number.

• Is the figure stated in RMB, and if converted to another currency, at what rate and date?
• Does the figure carry a fiscal-year-end date, and does that match the calendar year it appears to describe?
• Does the same metric appear in the next edition of the same series, confirming it is a continuing measure rather than a one-off?

None of this makes a Chinese company filing or a CNNIC survey less reliable; it means the currency and the period are part of the figure, not incidental detail to be dropped when the number is repeated elsewhere.
