The figure or the record
QuestMobile, a Chinese mobile-data firm, published its QuestMobile 2026短剧行业洞察报告 (QuestMobile 2026 Short-Drama Industry Insight Report) on 8 April 2026, stating that as of February 2026 monthly active users (MAU) across the short-drama industry reached 718 million, with standalone short-drama apps at 335 million and WeChat mini-programs at 427 million, rising 74.3 per cent and 59.9 per cent year-on-year respectively. This record was read in the original Chinese via QuestMobile's own report catalogue, which carries the report's title, date and headline figures.
What the documents establish
QuestMobile's figures show standalone apps and mini-programs tracked separately, and that their sum (762 million) exceeds the stated combined MAU of 718 million — a material share of users open short dramas through both an app and a mini-program in the same month, and the total accounts for that overlap rather than simply adding the two. The China Netcasting Services Association's 2025 whitepaper (《中国微短剧行业发展白皮书(2025)》) gives a usage-intensity figure for January–August 2025 (120.5 minutes average daily use per app user) that complements, without matching, QuestMobile's method. CNNIC's 55th Statistical Report put national microdrama users at 662 million in December 2024, by household survey, not app-panel data.
Scope and caveats
MAU counts people who opened a short-drama app or mini-program at least once in the month; it says nothing about spending, episode completion, or session length. QuestMobile's mini-program figure is specific to WeChat, and the report does not state whether mini-programs on other platforms are counted inside or outside the 718 million total. The gap between QuestMobile's panel-based MAU, CNSA's survey-and-industry-data estimate, and CNNIC's household-survey count is a reminder that 'users' is not one measurement: each series uses a different sample and a different definition of use.
What to watch
Editorially, the figure worth tracking is whether QuestMobile's mini-program share keeps growing faster than its standalone-app share, since a mini-program avoids app-store commission entirely, which matters more to a platform's revenue than to its reported user count.
- Does a quoted MAU figure separate standalone apps from mini-programs, or report them as one number?
- Is a total user figure a simple sum of channels, or does it account for overlap?
- Does a usage-intensity figure come from the same sample as the user count it is paired with?
None of these three counts is wrong; each measures a different population by a different method, and a reader who treats 718 million, 662 million and a minutes-per-day figure as parts of one series will overstate how much any of them can support.
