Southeast Asia leads short-drama downloads, not its revenue

Sensor Tower's 2026 report splits Q1 downloads by region; the leading region for installs names a different leader for money.

The figure or the record

Sensor Tower, an app-analytics firm, published its State of Short Drama Apps 2026 report in June 2026, written by Donny Kristianto, its principal market insights manager. The report states that global short-drama downloads surpassed 850 million in the first quarter of 2026, up 140% year on year, while in-app purchase revenue reached roughly $750 million in the same quarter, up 20% year on year. By region, the report states that Southeast Asia, Latin America and India together accounted for more than three-quarters of global downloads, led by Southeast Asia at 32%, Latin America at 23% and India at 22%, with all three posting triple-digit year-on-year growth. The same document then names the market leaders by a different metric: 'ReelShort remains a revenue and engagement leader in the U.S.', while 'FreeReels has built rapid download momentum in India and Southeast Asia'.

What the documents establish

One report states two separate geographies for two separate metrics. The download-share figures are estimated from App Store and Google Play data, and the report is explicit that this excludes pre-installs, re-downloads and third-party Android marketplaces. No equivalent regional split is given for the $750 million in-app purchase total; the only revenue geography named in the document is the United States, attached to a single named app. A separate release from the analyst Omdia, published in February 2026, corroborates that pattern from an independent angle, naming the US as the largest single market outside China by revenue while never citing Southeast Asian revenue figures at all.

Scope and caveats

A download is a single event on a store ledger; it does not mean the user opened the app twice, paid for anything, or is still using it months later. Sensor Tower's own report acknowledges as much elsewhere, noting that engagement in Southeast Asia is approaching 40 minutes a day, which is a measure of intensity among people who stayed, not of how many downloads converted to paying users. A region can lead installs while contributing little to the $750 million because in-app purchase pricing, payment-method access and average willingness to pay all vary by market in ways this report does not itemise by country.

What to watch

This is editorial: the number worth tracking next is not Southeast Asia's download share but whether any analyst publishes a regional breakdown of the $750 million itself, which would show whether monetisation is catching up to installs or staying concentrated in mature markets.

  • Does a future Sensor Tower or rival report break in-app purchase revenue down by region rather than only by app?
  • Is Southeast Asia's 40-minute daily engagement figure holding as download growth continues?
  • Which specific apps are driving the 32% Southeast Asia download share, and do they monetise through ads or unlocks?

Downloads and dollars are both real numbers in this report, but they describe different populations doing different things. A region can top one chart and barely register on the other, and the ledger keeps that distinction rather than letting a single 'leading market' headline stand for both.
