2024 established paid mobile distribution as a measurable pillar of the category, while leaving total business economics unobserved.
Reported figure
Sensor Tower reported that short-drama app downloads increased by 320 million year over year in 2024. It identified DramaBox, ShortMax and ReelShort as accounting for 76% of that year's downloads. That is a concentration measure for downloads, not a statement about viewing time, revenue, catalogue share or profitability. Still, it identifies a market in which a few distribution machines captured most of the new installs.
The acquisition signal
The same analysis estimated that paid downloads made up more than 60% of 2024 downloads for DramaBox and ShortMax and 70% for ReelShort. The three platforms generated more than five billion ad impressions globally, with Facebook and TikTok identified as important networks. That puts creative testing and media buying beside commissioning as a core input. A title may be the product, but an install is often purchased before it becomes a viewer relationship.
Sensor Tower also found overlap between short-drama audiences and mobile-game usage: games represented more than 30 of the 100 most-used apps among the category's U.S. audience, and more than half in Brazil in the third quarter. This is not causal evidence that dramas displaced games. It is a useful warning that the relevant competitive set includes other mobile attention products, not only television services.
What the measure can support
The durable conclusion is narrower than a claim that vertical drama had already replaced streaming. The data show a sharp rise in app acquisition and a concentrated set of leading apps in 2024. They do not reveal web payments, ad revenue, production cost, customer-acquisition cost, retention by cohort, or title-level economics. Sensor Tower's awards page separately recorded 475 million downloads and $1.45 billion in user spending for top short-drama apps in 2024; that is a related measurement with a differently defined app set.
For a ledger, the useful unit is therefore 'mobile storefront activity observed by Sensor Tower,' not total vertical-drama demand. Operators comparing this record with company revenue should first ask whether direct checkout, third-party Android stores and advertising are included. Without that reconciliation, a precise-looking total is a category error.
